Nvidia's view on XGL vs maturing X.org (am I right?) XGL may actually be harder to implement in the long run. I'm a long run type person, and I buy things that will be most effective over time.

The paper suggests that XGL could make it hard for vendors to implement their special features... [keeping the hardware guys from having their special features driving sales of their cards]

It's interesting. nVidia could always put part more of their code out in a GPL licence.. and make the vendor specific features be... snapped up by other vendors... I'm pretty sure that lots of Nvidia's "intelectual property" lies in the driver, and would work with little modification on another chip.If they had a nearly fully open source driver, they'd be forced to just create hardware... and maybe they don't think that's fun right now. It doesn't feel right to sell hardware because of secret software. I'm tired and I'm going to think about how people can still get rewarded for innovating.
